HearWise presents
What you hear changes how your brain works to understand the world.
You don't need a diagnosis to be affected. Even if your hearing has never been questioned.
I want to understand what's happening Live 90-minute session · 30 places · €297It may not be stress. It may not be aging. Your brain may simply be working much harder to understand sound than anyone — including you — realises. And there is a name for what's happening. Not a diagnosis. An explanation.
Notice how easy or hard each one feels.
Puzzle 1 — quiet room
Using any vowel, fill in: p _ t
How many words can you make? Think for a moment...
Puzzle 2 — noisy room
Using any consonants, fill in: _ a _
How many words can you make? Think for a moment...
Consonants carry most of the meaning in language — but they are also the sounds most easily masked by background noise and most affected by changes in how we process sound. When your brain cannot distinguish consonants clearly, every conversation in a noisy room becomes exactly like Puzzle 2. Not once. Continuously. For hours. That is what is exhausting you.
Standard hearing tests measure whether sound reaches your ears. They do not measure what happens next — how your brain processes that sound under pressure, in noise, across a conversation. That system can be under strain for years before anyone notices. Including you.
You haven't been imagining it. You haven't been failing. You've been managing without knowing what you're managing.
The exhaustion is real. The withdrawal is real. The effort it takes just to follow a dinner table conversation is real. It has a name — not a diagnosis, not a verdict, just an explanation. One that changes everything about how you understand your own experience.
Imagine knowing — not hoping, not guessing — exactly which situations drain you and why. Imagine having a framework so clear that the next time you walk into a noisy room, you're making an informed choice rather than bracing for impact.
This is not about getting your old self back. A hearing aid is an aid, not a cure, and anyone who promises you a return to who you were before is not being honest with you.
What this is about is something more useful than that: understanding your own Listening Network well enough to stop the invisible drain. Protecting what's there. Making decisions based on accurate information instead of self-blame and guesswork.
Understand Listening. Protect Your Brain. Reconnect with Life.
The six-stage system from sound entering your ears to feeling connected to the people around you. Most people recognise themselves within the first ten minutes.
Where your network is working hardest and what that costs you — cognitively, emotionally, and relationally. Not in clinical terms. In the language of your actual days.
Intelligent, evidence-based adjustments that work with your situation. A stepwise approach that explains the why behind every what. Not compensation. Optimisation.
Internationally recognised audiologist, clinical researcher, and co-author of The Listening Network framework — the peer-reviewed, multi-country scientific model underpinning everything in this session. This is not information you will find elsewhere, presented in language you will actually use.
Yours to keep. Return to it whenever you need to.
A short self-assessment mapping exactly where your Listening Network is working hardest. Complete it before the session and arrive already knowing where to focus.
What the hearing test doesn't measure. If you've been told your hearing is fine but nothing feels fine, this is the explanation you have been waiting for.
Read this on day one. It won't fix anything yet. But it will tell you, in plain language, what it actually feels like to understand your own Listening Network.
Hearing is just the beginning. What happens next — through six stages — shapes your energy, your relationships, and your quality of life.
This framework was originally developed through research with cochlear implant users — people at the sharp end of listening difficulty. But the cascade it describes is the same for all of us. When any part of the network is under strain, everything downstream feels harder.
I am an audiologist, clinical researcher, and lecturer with decades of experience across more than thirty countries. I have lectured at the University of Melbourne, Australia, the University of Colorado Boulder, USA, and the University of Basel, Switzerland. My clinical research includes cochlear implant work across the USA, Europe, and South Africa — work that sits at the leading edge of what we know about how the brain processes sound. I co-authored The Listening Network — a peer-reviewed scientific framework describing the six-stage cascade from hearing through to quality of life — and I have spent my career at the intersection of what the science says and what people actually experience in their daily lives.
I built HearWise and this site because the gap between those two things is too wide, and too many intelligent people are spending too many years blaming themselves for something that was never their fault.
You don't need a diagnosis to be here. You just need to suspect that something is happening — and want to understand it.
Yes — and this is precisely who it is for. Standard hearing tests measure whether sound reaches your ears. They do not measure what happens next: how your brain processes that sound under pressure, in noise, across a conversation. If you passed the test but nothing feels fine, that gap is exactly what this session explains.
That is the most common thing people say before they attend this session. Exhaustion after social situations, difficulty following conversations in noise, a sense of disconnection — these are not personality traits or signs of aging. They are recognisable, documented consequences of a listening system under strain. You don't need a label to benefit from understanding what's happening.
No. This session is not a clinical assessment and it does not end with a device recommendation. It ends with understanding — of your own Listening Network, where it is working hardest, and what intelligent adjustments look like for your specific situation.
This is the most honest concern and it deserves an honest answer. Yes — understanding what's happening makes it harder to dismiss. But the dismissal was never protecting you. It was just delaying the guessing. What replaces it is not fear. It is the specific, quiet relief of finally having an accurate explanation for your own experience.
Yes. The recording will be sent to everyone who registers. But if you can attend live, I'd encourage it — the questions that come up in the room are often the most valuable part of the session.
If you have been reading this and recognising yourself, that recognition is information. It is telling you something your hearing test didn't.
